Closed Cell Foam for interior applications is typically a 1.8 - 1.9 lb density foam that has an R-Value of 6.3 per inch (highest R-Value per inch than any other insulation materials).  Closed cell foam has approximately 1 million closed cells per square inch which creates for a strong, durable insulation material that does not accept water.  Closed cell foam eliminates the need for house wrap as 2.5" creates a thermal barrier in the walls.
Due to it's strength and high R-Value, buildings can be framed in with 2x4's instead of 2x6's saving money and valuable resources while able to achieve the necessary R-Value required by code.   With R-19 being standard requirement for insulation - 3" of Spray foam meets that requirement.  However that being said, most homes and buildings enjoy excellent savings and comfort with 2.5" in the walls and 3.5" in the ceiling.
A test at the Dept of Energy found that closed cell foam is 56% more effective than batt  or blown in insulation (conventional Insulation).  Therefore, the foam insulation gives a much higher insulation value, eliminates draft, tightens up the structure, will not sag over time.
Closed cell foam can be applied throughout the entire building.  Foundation walls, underside of the crawl space, interior walls and attic to create a fully conditioned house.  The use of Spray Foam Insulation in your house will reduce the size of the furnace / a/c unit being installed.  Spray foam insulation consistently saves customers enough money to see a complete payback b/w 3 - 5 years.  Commercial buildings also can greatly benefit by the use of Spray Foam also from the top of their buildings all the way down to the ground.  For more information, click here.
If your looking to build, remodel, upgrade your insulation - take a serious look at what Spray Foam can do for you by calling(540) 432-1245 and asking for your free quote.  Also, since the Government has extended the tax benefits (30% up to $1500) for energy efficient products installed or upgraded and since spray foam meets all the requirements for the LEED program as well, click here to get to the link for your residential tax savings.  Commercial owners looking to benefit from the tax benefits should click here.

Open Cell Foam for interior use only is typically a .5 lb density foam that incorporates water into the blowing agent which allows for a much greater expansion of the foam.  Having an expansion rate of 150 to 1, open cell foam is designed to fill the spaces in the walls.  Having an R-Value of 3.9 per inch of foam, it requires almost the entire 2x6 spacing to meet the required R-Value of R-19.
Open Celled foam is, as it is termed, open celled.  It has no structural stability with it.  It is not a vapor barrier, it is a foam insulation that can be applied to walls and attics to create an effective insulation.  By it's very nature, the open celled foam will accept water because as it is expanding, it does so as it reacts violently with the water in the expansion process that it literally breaks open the cell structure.
Open cell foam is easy to cut.  You can grab it with your hands and literally crush it like a foam cushion.  Most of the time when you see foam insulation being applied, it is expanding close to the ends of the studs or just beyond and then being cut off with a foam saw blade.
Open cell foam does require more room to expand, it cannot be applied to the underside of a house.  In the pictures above, it was being applied to the underside of the roof deck to meet county requirements for R-Value as the roof had a 2.5" closed cell Spray Foam and Coatings roofing system applied over top of it.
This particular house had ICF block walls (Insulated Concrete Forms) which have extremely high insulation in themselves.  This particular house was built in the style of a castle and as you can see from the picture on the left - there was a gap which would have been impossible to fill with batt insulation.  So, we closed off that gap sealing in the heating and cooling from escaping up the ends of the rafters / walls.  This particular application would have been very difficult and way too expensive to try to close that off with closed cell foam.  Open cell foam was the perfect solution for this building.
